Disaster Relief & Temporary Emergency Aid

Year: 2020
Amount: $53,553 granted to 182 families
Details: The global pandemic unveiled unprecedented challenges for individuals and organizations alike. Beginning in March, a government-mandated quarantine restricted the ability of rural Ugandans to move about and sell goods and services, which severely and negatively impacted their ability to earn steady income.

In conversation with our Field Partners, Lugacraft Uganda, we were able to coordinate monthly relief packages in the form of unrestricted cash grants – money that was used to address families’ most pressing needs, including both fresh and non-perishable goods, as well as sanitation products like soap. Relief budgets were proposed and ratified by community leadership, allowing them to dictate where relief was best applied.

Year: 2018
Amount: $1,300 granted to 26 families
Details: In April 2018, just months after the launch of our first project in Buyenje Village, the area received a massive amount of rain that washed away many of the new crops that were planted.

We were able to immediately intervene to provide direct monetary relief that was used to purchase food and new seeds to begin replanting. By giving relief directly to families, they were able to use it to purchase local supplies at local rates, and without delay.

In partnership with Lugacraft, we underwrote locally-led workshops that taught modern effective drainage techniques, delivered by local experts from an agrarian-focused university, to help mitigate the risk of a similar disaster having the same effect in the future.
